NEW TRACK, OLD WINNER AT DUNN HILL 2 SPEEDWAY
Myerstown PA, July 11th, 2010:
As the 16 car SpeedSTR
field was getting hot laps it was apparent that someone needed to
take some notes during those 4 laps as well as the 8 lap qualifiers
in order to find the quick way around the big 1/4 mile called
DunnHill 2 Speedway in Monroeton, PA. The heat races saw quite a few
positions being swapped as the fastest car was not necessarily the
car heading to the front. With each turn at Dunn Hill 2 being
different, it was almost like racing on a 4 turned dirt version of
Pocono International Raceway as many race teams had to scramble for
a set-up that would benefit them at both ends of the speedway.
The first 4 in each heat
would be locked into a redraw and with much discussion regarding the
360 spin rule being thrown out, it put the driver talents on the
line as everyone did a great job in a smooth running set of
qualifiers that saw Don Zrinski and Tyler Potts showing the way when
the checkers were thrown. The Canada Contingent looked really strong
as did STR rental chauffeur Chris Stockham looking right at home in
the Bulldog Arts Special # 5 which saw victory lane a week before
with "The Mayor of Woxall" Rick Schaffer at the controls.
A new STR delivery for
Jean-Nicholas Gareau had him planted firmly in the front row for his
qualifying event and after falling back at the start he held his own
for the remaining laps and was looking forward to feature time. As
the green flag for the first ever SpeedSTR race at DunnHill 2 was
being waved it was evident that each team had notes to fall back own
after the heats and a competitive race was about to transpire. Jeff
Gallup from Baldwinsville, NY, got caught up on the turn 2 banking as
he looped the 9 during lap 1 action. A complete restart was called
for from the yellow and for the next 18 laps it was a challenge to
see who took the best notes and had their car set-up for the tricky
banking.
Mario Page, Chris
Stockham and Gabriel Richer all had different lines on the track,
but heading through the field from his 7th place starting spot was
the 75 of Don Zrinski and he had a groove no one used to become a
challenger for the victory as he planted himself firmly behind the
Page # 10,lapped traffic was now becoming a part of the scenery and
it was here that Page realized he had to go slower to go faster and
he used this theory to it's fullest as the lapped traffic held their
lines giving Page a chance to pick and choose the best spots to get
by.
The 5 to go was being
displayed and now the next 6 drivers in line all knew that time was
running out as Salfordville, Pa's, Fred Rahmer got the Rahmer
Motorsports 51 by the THP Racing # 12 of Tyler Potts and was
looking to challenge DJ Macri in the SE # 2 for 4th.Potts now had to
contend with Brandon Rahmer in the RMS # 8 as Kaitie McCardle got
the McCardle Motorsports # 11 hooked up in the late stages of the 20
lap main to now hope to be a factor in the top 5 at the finish.
There was no stopping
Page at the front and just as the 2 lap to go sign was displayed Don
Zrinski's KIWI Farms 75 spun in turn 4 after a great run and a
serious bid for the win dashed, he was now hoping he could still
pass a few cars once the green brought the cars to speed for the
remaining 2 laps. The single file start went off without a hitch as
Page resumed his command on the field with Stockham having to ward
off the outside line attempts for the runner-up spot from Gabriel
Richer, who had his green 10X up against the turn 2 retaining wall
in hopes of keeping the line heading into turn 3,with Stockham
holding his line and thwarting the Canadians advances. White flag
now out to the field and it was a race to the finish line to declare
a 9th place finisher as Scott "The Bulldog" Munroe had the power off
of turn 4 to hold off a last lap dash by Brittany Wixon who just
nosed out a resurgent Don Zrinski for 10th. The action was non-stop
and many drivers were impressed with the speedway and it's ever
changing track conditions.
